Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing food production sectors in the world – and one of the most scrutinised.
“We’ve been harvesting 90 million tons of fish globally for the last 30 years and it hasn’t collapsed at all. Aquaculture has boomed to 100 million this year. And fisheries are still where they were. So that whole story about aquaculture growth would lead to overfishing — it’s rubbish. It’s not true. And we’ve got evidence in spades to show that,” said Dr Brett Glencross, Technical Director of IFFO.
However, as global demand for protein continues to rise and wild fish stocks face mounting pressure, the industry finds itself at a defining moment.
The decisions made in the next decade will determine how well aquaculture fulfils its potential as a cornerstone of global food security.
On July 8, AgTechNavigator will explore the challenges and tensions in the aquaculture industry during its inaugural webinar dedicated to this vital sector.
Aquaculture advances: Innovation opportunities for human and animal health will explore how innovation can help the sector navigate its next phase of growth.
Designed for industry leaders, researchers, investors and policymakers, the webinar offers a timely forum to examine how the sector can rise to the occasion and shape a more sustainable future in the coming decade.
AgNavigator’s editorial team will bring together industry leaders from New Zealand to India to Iceland to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing the industry today – from feed quality and alternative proteins to energy dependency, animal welfare, regulatory barriers, and the emerging opportunities around waste valorisation and circularity.
These are not abstract questions. They are the practical challenges facing producers, investors, regulators, and innovators right now.
The decisions made in the next decade will determine whether aquaculture fulfils its potential or falls short of it.
The panel brings together expertise spanning research, entrepreneurship, finance and industry leadership.
