Ahead of its planned separation on 1 October, Corteva has confirmed that Vylor, its new standalone seed and genetics company, will launch hybrid hard red winter wheat in North America in late 2027 using a proprietary hybridisation system called Xpedite.
Xpedite platform set for 2027 launch
The announcement, made during Corteva’s Investor Day on 15 September, represents the latest milestone in a decades-long industry effort to commercialise hybrid wheat, a goal that has repeatedly been delayed by the crop’s complex biology and the difficulty of producing hybrid seed economically at scale.
Unlike corn, wheat is naturally self-pollinating, making hybrid seed production significantly more challenging. While researchers have successfully produced hybrid wheat for decades, scaling production at a commercially viable cost has proven elusive.
Vylor believes Xpedite has solved that problem.
The company said its proprietary, non-GMO system has been shown in trials to work across all wheat germplasm tested, allowing hybrid seed production at commercial scale while accelerating the introduction of elite genetics into breeding programmes.
Beyond a single hybrid variety
The significance of the announcement lies not simply in the launch of a new wheat product but in Corteva’s claim that Xpedite is a platform technology capable of transforming wheat breeding itself.
Hybrid seeds are created by crossing two genetically different parent lines to produce offspring with improved vigour, resilience and yield potential. According to Vylor, wheat produced through Xpedite can increase yield potential by 10% while using the same amount of land and resources, and can deliver yields up to 20% higher than elite conventional varieties under water-stressed conditions.
The company also expects the technology to double the rate of annual genetic gain in wheat by 2040 compared with conventional breeding approaches.
Importantly, as a conventionally bred product, Vylor’s hybrid wheat does not require regulatory approval before commercialisation.
Wheat becomes Vylor’s third growth pillar
Vylor expects hybrid wheat to become a major new revenue stream alongside its established corn and soybean businesses.
The company projects its North American wheat portfolio will generate $500m in revenue by 2035 and $1bn by 2040, including licensing income.
“Wheat is grown on nearly 550 million acres globally and on more than 60 million acres in North America, making it the region’s third largest row crop,” said future Vylor chief commercial and operations officer Judd O’Connor during the Investor Day presentation.
“It is also, importantly, a critical source of food for hundreds of millions of people, accounting for 20% of calories consumed worldwide. These numbers give a sense of the scale of the impact our technology can have.”
Following the initial 2027 launch of hard red winter wheat, Vylor plans to introduce soft red winter wheat in 2029 and hard red spring wheat in 2030, while expanding internationally through licensing agreements, partnerships and acquisitions.
How Vylor’s strategy differs from rivals
Several major crop input companies are pursuing hybrid wheat, but their approaches differ markedly.
Syngenta is currently the commercial frontrunner, having already launched hybrid wheat through its AgriPro brand in North America. Its strategy focuses on delivering commercial hybrids that provide yield gains of around 10-12%, greater yield stability and reduced seeding rates.
Bayer, meanwhile, is pursuing a longer-term strategy centred on advanced breeding and a recently expanded partnership with French seed company RAGT. The company is targeting hybrid wheat launches in Europe and North America in the early 2030s and views the technology as a future billion-euro business.
BASF has effectively exited the race, having abandoned North American hybrid wheat research in 2023 after inheriting earlier Bayer programmes.
Corteva’s position is that Xpedite is more than a new seed product. Instead, the company is presenting the technology as a scalable breeding platform capable of overcoming the production bottlenecks that have historically constrained hybrid wheat development.
