As Corteva prepares to spin off its advanced seed and genetics business as Vylor on October 1, 2026, the company has offered a compelling explanation for the separation: a corn innovation roadmap centred on proprietary biotechnology, gene editing, elite germplasm and licensing revenue.
The announcement goes well beyond a product update. Instead, it highlights the types of assets that investors typically value differently from a diversified crop protection and seeds company, namely intellectual property-rich technologies capable of generating long-term royalties and expanding licensing opportunities.
In doing so, the roadmap underscores Corteva’s argument that Vylor can create greater shareholder value as a pure-play seeds, genetics and trait developer than as part of a broader agricultural inputs portfolio.
Building a royalty-advantaged business
Vylor expects its corn portfolio to generate more than $2bn in incremental revenue by 2035, including licensing income, with seven new technology platforms scheduled for launch over the next decade. Collectively, these technologies are expected to be deployed across 90% of the company’s corn business.
Sam Eathington, future chief technology officer of Vylor, described the pipeline as the product of billions of dollars of R&D investment over the past decade.
“We are building long-term, royalty-advantaged technology platforms that give Vylor more freedom to innovate, grows our licensing business and positions the company for sustained leadership,” he said.
That emphasis is significant. One of the central pillars of the Vylor investment case is the company’s transition from a technology licensee to a technology licensor, creating recurring revenue streams from proprietary genetics and traits.
A decade-long pipeline of proprietary technologies
The roadmap begins in Latin America in 2028 with the launch of Abranvo technology, combining new modes of action against fall armyworm with herbicide tolerance and yield-enhancing characteristics.
A year later, Vylor plans to introduce next-generation above-ground insect control in North America, paired with what it says will be the industry’s first trait specifically designed to improve yield and yield stability. In field trials across the Americas, the company said the technology delivered average gains of three bushels per acre, with increases of up to 10 bushels per acre.
The pipeline then expands into areas increasingly associated with premium technology valuations, including gene editing and novel trait development.
Among the headline innovations is a gene-edited multi-disease resistant corn platform that targets four major diseases simultaneously: Northern Corn Leaf Blight, Grey Leaf Spot, Southern Rust and Anthracnose Stalk Rot. Vylor also plans to commercialise reduced-stature corn and, by 2031, launch a new below-ground insect control platform featuring two proprietary non-Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis, a naturally occurring bacterium) modes of action.
