BASF Agricultural Solutions has announced plans to invest around €15 million in a new Climate Center at its global research headquarters in Limburgerhof, Germany, in a move aimed at strengthening the company’s research infrastructure and regulatory capabilities.
Construction of the purpose-built facility is already underway and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. Once operational, the Climate Center will house advanced climate chambers capable of providing precisely controlled environmental conditions for scientific studies supporting the registration of crop protection products globally.
The investment comes as regulatory requirements for crop protection products continue to tighten and demand grows for high-quality ecotoxicology studies conducted under Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
“The new Climate Center is much more than a research facility. It is a strategic investment that supports our ambition to combine world-class research with enhanced regulatory capabilities,” said Melanie Bausen-Wiens, Member of the Management Board of BASF Agricultural Solutions responsible for Technology.
“This will enable us to bring innovative solutions to farmers more efficiently, responsibly and in line with evolving regulatory requirements.”
Responding to growing regulatory complexity
Speaking to AgNavigator, a BASF spokesperson said increasing regulatory scrutiny was a key driver behind the decision to invest in the new facility.
“Regulatory requirements for crop protection products are becoming increasingly complex, and the demand for high-quality ecotoxicology studies continues to grow,” the spokesperson said.
“The investment will help ensure that BASF can generate scientifically robust data and maintain the high-quality standards required by regulatory authorities globally.”
The facility will allow researchers to precisely control factors such as temperature, humidity and light, improving the reproducibility of studies while increasing planning reliability, data quality and overall research capacity.
According to BASF, these highly controlled conditions are critical for producing the robust scientific evidence required by regulators during the product registration process.
Supporting next-generation crop protection innovation
Alongside regulatory studies, part of the Climate Center will be dedicated to insecticide research.
The climate-controlled chambers will be used to breed insect populations required for early-stage screening and discovery programmes, supporting the development of future chemical and biological crop protection products.
“Insects produced in the new facility will support early-stage screening of novel chemical and biological crop protection concepts,” the spokesperson said.
“The screening is designed to accelerate the identification of concepts with improved properties that address current and future environmental and societal expectations.”
Strengthening Limburgerhof’s role as a global innovation hub
BASF said the investment reinforces its long-term commitment to Limburgerhof, which serves as the company’s global research headquarters for Agricultural Solutions.
Expanding the site’s infrastructure is expected to strengthen scientific capabilities, enhance competitiveness and help attract future talent.
Asked why Limburgerhof had been chosen over other BASF R&D locations, the company pointed to the concentration of expertise already present at the site.
“Limburgerhof is the global research headquarters of BASF Agricultural Solutions and home to a broad range of scientific disciplines, infrastructure and expertise,” the spokesperson said.
“Locating the Climate Center here enables close collaboration between research teams and builds on the site’s longstanding role as a key innovation hub.”
The new facility will become a central part of BASF’s global agricultural innovation network, supporting both regulatory science and the development of the next generation of crop protection technologies.
