Biologicals for animal health: BiomEdit readies dual Brazil launch for 2027 following Folium acquisition

BiomEdit is developing a new class of bio-based therapeutics to treat a variety of animal diseases with two products in the pipeline to launch in 2027 thanks to its acquisition of Folium Science

Indiana-based BiomEdit is expanding its gene-editing technology with the purchase of fellow biotech company Folium Science Technology, which not only comes with technical capabilities but also a feed additive primed to release on the Brazilian market.

Started in 2022, BiomEdit uses fermentation and gene-editing to develop genetically engineered bacterial biologics to be used as animal disease treatment. The start-up’s first product is BE-101, which treat necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens by expressing molecules that neutralize toxins produced by Clostridium perfringens, the bacterium responsible for necrotic enteritis, AgNavigator previously reported.

Through the acquisition, the company gains access to Folium’s Guided Biotics CRISPR-Cas technology that targets specific bacteria in a microbiome without impacting the broader community, serving as a natural complement to BiomEdit’s existing technologies, Aaron Schacht, CEO of BiomEdit, told AgNavigator.

Several key members of the Folium team will stay on with BiomEdit as advisors to integrate CRISPR-Cas platform into BiomEdit’s system, Schacht noted.

“You think about the function keys on your keyboard. You have copy and paste and delete and insert. So, what I would say is BiomEdit has copy/paste/insert functionality. We could take a microbe from the gut, for example. We could engineer it to have a new function. So, we’d insert a gene or paste in some biological function, then we put it back in the gut and let it do its job. And that’s how we deliver efficacy relative to the BiomEdit frame,” Schacht said.

He added, “The Folium frame was the opposite end of the keyboard in the sense that have in essence the delete function. … They take a non-pathogenic bacterial strain, they engineer it to have this CRISPR-Cas payload, and then there’s a natural phenomenon that you can take advantage of where one species of bacteria conjugates with another, and they exchange genetic materials.”

‘We’ll be launching two products in Brazil, simultaneously, sometime next year’

As per the deal, BiomEdit will acquire Folium’s feed additive BiomElix One, which is a non-pathogenic E. coli strain with a CRISPR payload system, “designed to knock out key genes in salmonella,” Schacht said. Folium already received regulatory approval from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and was working to finalize the formulation, he added.

BiomEdit plans to finish product development and launch the product in Brazil and then use the regulatory expertise to expand its BE-101 product into the country, Schacht noted. BiomEdit is “still very much on track” to receive U.S. conditional licensure for BE-101 this quarter, with final approval imminent, Schacht said.

“In essence, the way the timelines potentially line up, we’ll be launching two products in Brazil, simultaneously, sometime next year,” Schacht elaborated.

BiomEdit on path for Series C round

After receiving the licensure, BiomEdit will launch its Series C round, having raised $36.5 million in a Series A round in 2022 and $18.5 million Series B round in 2025.

The start-ups Series C round will be used to commercialize the two products. The Folium acquisition “did not materially alter BiomEdit’s trajectory from use of cash, use of capital perspective” and was “purely opportunistic,” Schacht noted.

“We’ve been waiting on the license and a press release on the license to indicate to folks that we’re now formally raising a Series C, aimed at a target of closing that in the first quarter of next year. And so that gives us that six-month magic window to try to put it all together,” Schacht elaborated.

Looking ahead, BiomEdit will move all its projects into in-vivo testing, with the company currently conducting turkey studies to test if a toxin is responsible for gangrenous dermatitis, Schacht said. Potentially, a million Thanksgiving turkeys could be treated with a BiomEdit product before families sit down to enjoy their holiday meal, he added.
