Bayer has announced the UK launch of MagicTrap 2, the latest version of its automated digital pest-monitoring system for oilseed rape.
The device uses a solar-powered camera and AI-based image analysis to detect, identify and count key oilseed rape pests including cabbage stem flea beetle, pollen beetle and weevils. Data is transmitted directly to Bayer’s MagicScout app, allowing growers and agronomists to monitor pest pressure remotely and receive alerts when activity levels increase.
The launch forms part of a wider European expansion, with MagicTrap 2 already available in Germany and Austria and scheduled to roll out across a further 14 markets by 2027.
Focus on better monitoring rather than bigger yields
While digital agriculture companies often emphasise productivity gains, Bayer is positioning MagicTrap’s value proposition differently.
Asked what evidence it has that the technology improves profitability, crop establishment or pest-management outcomes compared with conventional monitoring methods, a Bayer spokesperson said the strongest evidence currently relates to improved decision-making rather than measured agronomic outcomes.
“MagicTrap’s strongest proof points are around improved monitoring, earlier visibility of pest pressure, and better-informed decision-making, rather than quantified improvements in profitability, yield, or reductions in insecticide use.”
According to Bayer, the system’s real-time monitoring and automated alerts help users understand pest migration events and pressure levels between physical field visits, giving growers additional information on which to base management decisions.
Hardware improvements aim to improve reliability
The second-generation platform includes several hardware upgrades designed to improve performance in the field.
These include a higher-resolution camera with autofocus; an integrated flash for low-light monitoring; improved antenna connectivity; and updated LED indicators showing battery status and signal strength.

“The improved technology helps with day-to-day field use and provides a strong foundation for future tools that will continue to support British farmers in managing pest pressure more effectively.”
Growers value confidence and earlier warning
According to Bayer, user feedback has centred on improved visibility of pest activity and greater confidence in management decisions.
The company said growers and agronomists report earlier detection of pest movements, reduced reliance on manual trap inspections and increased confidence when assessing pest risk.
While there are examples where MagicTrap data has influenced decisions around insecticide timing and crop establishment, Bayer said the platform’s primary value lies in helping users make decisions sooner and with greater certainty.
“The strongest evidence today is that it helps users make more timely and informed decisions, often providing objective confirmation of field conditions rather than fundamentally changing agronomic strategy.”
More than a digital yellow trap?
Bayer also indicated that MagicTrap may evolve beyond its current role as a monitoring tool.
Asked whether the long-term vision is to create a broader AI-powered pest forecasting platform, the company highlighted the scale of the network it has already built.
“MagicTrap is already more than a digital yellow trap. Combining automated monitoring, AI-based pest recognition and actionable threshold alerts, it helps growers make timely pest management decisions.”
The company added that MagicTrap has established one of the largest digital pest-monitoring networks in agriculture and that expanding the network will strengthen data-driven insights and integrated pest-management recommendations.
